The Canadian citizenship test is a written examination administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to applicants who are 18 to 54 years old at the time of signing their application. The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official Discover Canada study guide. You have 45 minutes to complete it, and you need to answer at least 15 out of 20 questions correctly (75%) to pass.

The test covers six main topic areas: Canadian history, Canadian geography and regions, how the federal and provincial governments work, the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens, Canadian symbols and values, and Canada's economy. Applicants in certain provinces may also receive a small number of region-specific questions about their home province or territory — for example, questions about Manitoba's history or British Columbia's government structure.

Many people underestimate how broad the test is. The Discover Canada guide covers everything from the Confederation of 1867 and the role of the Governor General, to how to vote in a federal election and what the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees. Simply skimming the guide is rarely enough — most applicants who pass have done consistent practice with realistic test questions and timed mock exams.

If you fail the citizenship test, IRCC will schedule a second attempt. If you fail a second time, you are required to attend a hearing before a citizenship judge.
