✓Louis Riel

Why is this the correct answer?

Louis Riel is considered the father of Manitoba. He led the Métis people and negotiated Manitoba's entry into Confederation in 1870, though his legacy remains complex and debated.

Study Tip

Consider the historical figure associated with the Red River Rebellion and the establishment of the province of Manitoba. Think about the leader who played a key role in Manitoba's early history.

What should you know about this topic?

Louis Riel is considered the father of Manitoba. Riel was a Métis leader who led an armed uprising, known as the Red River Resistance, in 1869 and 1870. When the Hudson's Bay Company's vast territory was transferred to Canada, the Métis people living near the Red River feared for their land and rights, since Canada had not consulted them. Riel set up a provisional government and seized Fort Garry, in what is now Winnipeg.

Ottawa then negotiated with Riel's representatives, and Manitoba became a province in 1870, with protections for the French language and Catholic schools. However, Riel's government had executed a man named Thomas Scott, which caused outrage in Ontario, and Riel fled to the United States. In 1885 Riel led a second uprising, the North-West Rebellion in present-day Saskatchewan. It was put down, and Riel was tried and executed for high treason, a decision that was strongly opposed in Quebec.

Discover Canada notes that many people regard Riel as a hero, a defender of Métis rights and the father of Manitoba. To restore order in the West, Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald established the North West Mounted Police in 1873. For the test, connect this question with the Métis, the Red River Resistance, the NWMP and Manitoba's entry into Confederation.

Why are the other answers wrong?

  • Sam Steele: Sam Steele was a famous officer of the North West Mounted Police and a frontier hero, not Manitoba's founder.
  • Alfred Boyd: Alfred Boyd was an early Manitoba politician; the title father of Manitoba is given to Louis Riel.
  • John A. Macdonald: Sir John A. Macdonald was Canada's first Prime Minister and a key Father of Confederation, not the father of Manitoba.

What is the most common mistake?

Sir John A. Macdonald is the father of Confederation, not of Manitoba. The Métis leader Louis Riel is linked to Manitoba's creation.

How can you remember the answer?

"Riel and the Red River": two Rs that founded the province of Manitoba in 1870.
