How the 1,095-Day Rule Works
To apply for Canadian citizenship as an adult, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the 5 years right before you sign your application. The count works in two parts:
- →Days as a permanent resident within the 5-year window each count as one full day.
- →Days before you became a PR — as a temporary resident or protected person — each count as half a day, to a maximum of 365 days of credit.
- →You must also have filed income taxes for at least 3 of the 5 years to be eligible.
