Canadian Citizenship Physical Presence Calculator

How many days do you need to apply for Canadian citizenship?

You need 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada during the 5 years before you apply. Every day as a permanent resident counts as one day; time in Canada before becoming a PR counts as a half-day each, up to a 365-day maximum. Enter your days below to estimate where you stand.

Each counts as a full day (1 day = 1 day).

As a student, worker, visitor, or protected person — each counts as a half-day, up to 365 days of credit.

How the 1,095-Day Rule Works

To apply for Canadian citizenship as an adult, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the 5 years right before you sign your application. The count works in two parts:

  • Days as a permanent resident within the 5-year window each count as one full day.
  • Days before you became a PR — as a temporary resident or protected person — each count as half a day, to a maximum of 365 days of credit.
  • You must also have filed income taxes for at least 3 of the 5 years to be eligible.
